Parks & Gardens in Cologne

Even though Cologne is a city with millions of inhabitants, we like it green. Cologne has more green space to offer than many other cities. So here are a few tips where it is most beautiful and greenest in the city.

Flora & Botanical Garden

Here you will find more than 12,000 plant species on approx. Five and a half acres. The "Flora" garden was opened in 1864, after Bonn architect Peter Josef Lenné had designed it in the historical style. The English landscape garden and the water cascade in the Italian Renaissance style are also located here.

In 1914 the Botanical Garden was opened, where you can find plants from all the world's climate zones and admire many exotic plants.

Opening hours:
Botanical garden 8.00 o'clock until dawn (maximum 21.00 o'clock in summer)
Subtropics house from October to March from 10.00 to 16.00 o'clock, April to September from 10.00 o'clock to 18.00 o'clock

At the Botanical Garden 1a, 50735 Cologne

The Rhinepark

The approx. 40 hectares of Rheinpark is located directly between Mühlheim and Cologne and offers you an ideal oasis of relaxation. In 2007, the park was already 50 years old and was also awarded the title "Germany's most beautiful park", if this is not worth a visit.

What you can do in the park:

  • Inline skating, jogging
  • Cooling down in the accessible wells
  • Many playgrounds and the children's railway
  • Cologne Youth Park
  • Miniature golf
  • Take the cable car across the Rhine

The Cludius Therme is also located directly at the park.

Rheinparkweg 1, 50679 Köln

Green Belts & City Wood

As early as the 1920s, Cologne became greener because Konrad Adenauer created two green belts around the city. The Flora starts at the inner green belt and runs through Ehrenfeld to the university.

The outer green belt, on the other hand, is crossed by a military ring, so that there are many cycle paths. The municipal forest with its 400 hectares is also located on the outer green belt. The town forest is located in Lindenthal and a zoo can be visited here.

Opening hours of the zoo

  • January and February 9.00 to 17.00 o'clock
  • March 8.00 to. 18.00 o' clock
  • April 8.00 to 19.00 o' clock

Melaten Cemetery

Another place that offers silence, relaxation and tranquillity is the Melaten cemetery. It is located directly on Aachenerstraße, but as soon as you have walked a few steps into the cemetery, it is as if you had left the city.

Here you will find flower arrangements and many ornamental tombs. After all, there are some famous personalities here, such as Willy Millowitsch, Guido Westerwelle and Dirk Bach.
